Music Magazine: Photographs of Sam

Some of the photographs from the photo-shoot with Sam:

The first pose I started with was Sam facing forward, towards the camera. After a few shots with and without hands in his pockets, I decided that I didn't like these shots for cover, so I moved onto different poses.

I then took a series of different photographs with Sam looking left and right, again with hands in and out of pockets. These are the best of each pose. Unlike Luke, Sam looks natural with his hands out of his pockets. I also think he looks more natural looking to the left.

This is the photograph from the shoot that I think is the best and fits the description of what I want. He has his hands looking natural by his side, he isn't slouching or looking awkward and his facial expression looks unfazed by the photo-shoot, which gives off the rock-star vibe we were going for. I will use this one if I choose to use Sam for my front cover.

Music Magazine: Photographs

For my music magazine I started off by creating a two -former three-man band. I wanted this to be a rock band with a story. I first of took individual photos of each of the current band members: Sam and Luke. I done individual shots as to have the option of two different covers as I have been inspired by the 'two different cover to collect' so to add a USP to my magazine. I choose to shoot the photos against a brick background as it gives the photos extra edge without being over the top. Also, if i decided the brick isn't working then it can be edited out.

Magazine Analysis: Music Magazine Double Spreads

The coursework for this subject includes creating a double page spread for our music magazines. In order to get a better perspective on music magazine double page spread for magazines, I analyzed some by looking at the key conventions.

Q:

This text 'The Most Exciting People In Music' being larger than the rest and placed at the top means that it is posing at the title of this double page spread. The black text shows the reoccurring theme through this certain magazine and the red text below tells the reader the name of the artist.

Overlapping the entire page of text is a giant ‘J’. It is a J as that is the first letter of the artists name. This is used to make the page look more interesting and appealing to the readers. Also, the red colouring gives the page a dash of colour, and it a common colour associated with music magazines. This is one of the things that this magazine is well-known for doing. I like this but as it is associated with Q magazine, I won't use it for my magazine.

Drop capitals are used, yet same colour as rest of text. This is used to attract attention to the writing and also to break it up rather that it being a block text;  makes the reader know where new, important paragraphs begin. I like this technique as it looks interesting and this may inspire my magazine.

A large, interesting quote is extracted from the text and added on top of the main and only image on the left. This is used to give the reader something other that then image to look at on this page. Also to make the reader want to read to the text in order to find an explanation of the quote.

The entire left page is dominated by a picture of the artist the article is focusing on.  This is used to give clear indication who this particular article is about.  The black glasses paired with a close up imagine give both an inviting fell and an air of mystery. This contradicting message is there to make attract the readers to read the text. Also, as he is a well known artist, this will attract people who like him or want to know more about him.

In small text in the corner of the image, there is the name of the photo, the person who the photo is of and the place and date it was taken is all included. This is here to answer any unasked questions about the picture that the reader may want to know. However, this isn’t important information so it is in a small font size. This makes the page look more professional and is something that I like and may inspire my magazine.

The title of this double page spread isn't actually the name of the artist. Instead it is a reference to her song 'You've Got The Love', but changed to relate to the article. I like this idea as it makes the title more interesting. Two different fonts are used for the title. I think that magazine pulls that off but not many others would. There is also a few lines above the main interview text that is used to attract the readers to read the article. I like this idea and will let it inspire my magazine.

The colours used are grey and black for the text against a white background. This would look boring if the main and only image on the spread didn't have the large amount of red in it. This colour pallet gives the page a touch of class as it doesn't look overloaded with colour or like it is trying too hard. The other colour used is blue for the artist name in the text above the actual article interview text. This is so her name stands out for anyone who doesn't know who the artist is to find out. I really like this idea. Not only does it add more colour to the page subtly but it's good for the audience to find out who the artist is.

This spread also uses block capitals but only uses one on the first word of the block text. The text is split into three columns which are all different sizes. I like this idea also as the text doesn't look overwhelming in the first two columns. However, the third column is rather long, especially in comparison to all the other texts, so I don't like that.
The main image is the only image on the page. I like the simplicity of this. There is also a prop being used: the table with the red striped fabric over laying it.

Kerrang:

This double page spread is different to the others I have looked at as there are multiple pictures. I really like this idea as it makes the page look way more interesting. The colours used are white text on black background and black text on white background and occasionally red text on both. This is a common thing that music magazines do. I like the amount of red they have used: strictly for the text. I also like how the pictures are all black and white. I'm not sure if I will use this for my magazine but it will be an idea I experiment with.

The biggest piece of text on the page is a quote from the interview with the band. This is used to attract readers to read the rest of the interview. I like the idea of this also. I also like the use of two colours in the title. This makes it stand out more and look more interesting.

This spread, like the others, uses drop capitals for the first word of the text on the interview. The rest of that text is in two columns, both the same size. I like this as it doesn't look an overwhelming amount of text to read. There is a small piece of text in the corner of each photo that explains who it is and a quirky comment.

Another unique thing about this spread is the white vertical banner on the left side which goes into detail about the artists tracks. I like this idea but I think it's too out there for me to use in my magazine. There is also a small piece of advertising for the magazines website in the top left. I think this looks good on this spread but wouldn't look good with most other magazines.

Music Magazine Introduction

For the next section of my coursework, I will be making my own, original music magazine. The pages I will create are:

  • Front cover
  • Contents page
  • Double page spread (DPS)
I will do this by thinking up my own ideas and using at least 4 of my own photographs that I have taken: either from a photo-shoot or a concert/festival I have attended.

College Magazine: Software and Equipment

I decided to make my front cover and contents page on Adobe Photoshop as I used this software in previous school years and am familiar with it. Also, I felt that I could get the most realistic look using this. This software wasn't too hard to use as I am used to it but Photoshop is quite a complex software to use so it wasn't the easiest but in the end, I was pleased I had used it as the outcome came out looking more professional that it would've if I hadn't used some of the tools that it includes.

For this photo-shoot for my college magazine I used a regular digital camera. I got better quality photographs using this opposed to a camera phone. However, the pictures could've been better so next time I will use a digital slr to get a clearer image.

College Magazine: Finished Contents Page

This is my new, improved, finished contents page for my magazine.

After realizing I needed to change the layout and add more photos, I produced this page. I'm very pleased with the outcome. I think the extra pictures improve the overall effect of the page a lot. The feedback I got from peers was that they thought I had used appropriate images and the liked the use of the logo.

College Magazine: Making The Contents Page

For my new version of the contents page, I started off by preparing the three photographs I wanted to put into my contents page. These were two models: one from the front cover and one to go along with a different sell line. The other is a picture of a Costa cup to go along with another sell line. I am using three pictures on this page as I've used one on the front cover and I need a minimum of 4 original images for my entire magazine. I chose to only go with the minimum amount as it is only a college magazine. For my music magazine I will use more to make it look more professional.
I started off by editing the picture of Robyn (from front cover) so that the models outfit looks different to the one on the front cover. I did this by coloring each piece of clothing. Such as the jeans, I made them from blue denim to grey denim. I then cropped the picture. For the picture of Rosie I edited her skin to look better and more flawless as magazines are known for doing this. I then cropped it. For the picture of the Costa cup, I simply cropped it.
These are the pictures before (top) and after (bottom):

I then started on my actual contents page. I began with a white background and then adding in the college logo (to give authenticity) and the masthead (CONTENTS). I also added the date underneath in smaller font. I used the same font for my text as I did and even the same colours - white with a black outline - for my front cover masthead in order to continue with the theme and make the contents connect to the front cover.

I then added in my two photographs of the models. I experimented with the positioning of these but ended up with having them diagonal for each other, leaving white space on one side in order to put the article teasers. I will leave the Costa picture until I have put the text in to add it in, in order to fit around the text as I don't want it to be big and dominant on the page.

The next step was putting in the article teasers. This stage needed the most experimenting with. I had to decide where to separate the text as to fit into two places. I decided to keep the text black as if not then there might be too much colour as both the pictures on the page are quite colourful. I put the text into the same font as the sell lines on the front cover in order to continue with the theme of the magazine.

I has left a space next to the sell line that goes with the Costa picture in order to fit it in. So the next step was doing so. This step was easy as all I had to do was insert a photo and make it smaller so it would fit into the space allocated.

I then needed to put in sell lines to go with the larger photos. I was inspired to add these on top of the images themselves so it would be clear that they go along with them and also I think it looks good. When I added the sell lines on top in the same black as the rest of the article teasers, it didn't show up very well. So, in order to make them visible to the audience, I put them in white and added a black outline like I had done for the title. Once I had done this, my contents page was finished.
